Regional projects

DisabCouncil's capacity building, awareness raising and advocacy initiatives by regions

One of the pillars of DisabCouncil's Action plan is building capacities, awareness raising and advocacy work at regional, national and local levels for the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities. Work is done in these areas:

  1. Empowering national civil society organizations and persons and communities of persons with disabilities themselves, with the tools to contribute for the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities (through development of tools and initiatives such as reporting guidelines, workshops, joint submissions to the CRPD and other international forums, development and implementation of joint local projects contributing to the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities to education, employment, participation in political life, and the right to vote, full legal capacity, life in community among others, including support in successful advocacy of those rights before national and international institutions; wide dissemination of information about the performance of relevant states in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities by regions, including publication of States' reports, and other official documents such as Views and decisions of international institutions, concluding observations, statements, court's decisions and official public positions of the relevant states, as well as DisabCouncil's commentaries, shadow reports, and position papers on that performance, etc);
  2. Providing assistance to States parties in the design and realization of short medium and long term programs and plans of implementation of the CRPD Convention, including legal and institutional reforms, accessibility projects etc and development of national capacities for the preparation of national reports to the CRPD;
  3. Empowering persons with disabilities directly with the tools to protect and promote their human rights (such as concrete projects in the employment, education and other areas), including support in successful advocacy of those rights before national and international institutions, to facilitate their inclusion in society.
